The 22nd Season of the World Poker Tour® is expanding its calendar, including a notable stop in Canada. The WPT® Montreal event promises a series of three Championship competitions over a two-week festival at Playground.
WPT CEO Adam Pliska expressed excitement about reintegrating the Playground festival into the WPT itinerary, highlighting the anticipation of returning to Canada and the promise of a variety of events catering to different levels of the World Poker Tour.
Scheduled from May 9-22, the WPT Montreal event at Playground is set to offer a total of $3,500,000 CAD in guaranteed prizes. A highlight of this event will be the WPT Montreal Championship, which requires a $3,500 CAD entry fee and offers a guaranteed prize pool of $2,000,000 CAD, taking place from May 16-20.
Phil Sabbah, CEO of Playground, shared his enthusiasm for hosting the WPT Montreal, emphasizing the tournament’s role in creating historic moments in poker. He recounted memorable events at Playground, such as crowning the first female WPT open event champion and Mike Sexton winning his first WPT Championship, hinting at the extraordinary experiences expected this May.
In addition to the prestigious Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup, the event will also introduce the WPT Prime Cup at the celebrated Kahnawake poker venue near Montreal. The WPT Prime Montreal Championship, with a $1,150 CAD entry and a $1,000,000 CAD guaranteed prize pool, will unfold from May 12-17.
Both the WPT Prime Montreal and WPT Montreal Championships will feature a broadcasted final table on May 21 and May 22, respectively, with live streaming available on the WPT’s YouTube and Twitch channels.
The festival’s agenda also includes a WPT500 Championship from May 9-13 and a special Meet-Up Game on May 14, hosted by WPT Ambassador Brad Owen.
WPT Global, the tour’s official online poker platform, will play a pivotal role in the WPT Montreal festival by hosting starting flights for the WPT500 and WPT Prime Montreal events, facilitating online players’ progression to Day 2 in the live competition. WPT Global will further offer numerous satellite opportunities for participants aiming to secure a spot in the three main events. ClubWPT™ is set to sponsor three players for the $3,500 CAD Championship event.
Reflecting on the last WPT event in Montreal, held in late 2019, it featured three main competitions, including a WPT500, WPTDeepStacks, and a Main Tour event. The Main Tour event attracted 1,109 entries, generating a prize pool of $3,327,000 CAD, with Geoffrey Hum emerging victorious to claim his first WPT title, a $500,000 CAD prize, and an entry on the Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup.
